Make A Wish – “I wish we could have this much fun at work too!”
When people think of fun, they often imagine activities like playing sports, reading your favourite book, listening to music, or just chilling and relaxing. Workaholics might dismiss the idea of fun, believing it has no place in the workplace. We’re often taught to see work and fun as opposites, but successful people argue they are two sides of the same coin.
To do great work, you need to enjoy it. When you’re having fun, your attitude is positive, your commitment strong, and your enthusiasm high. Fun reduces stress, fosters creativity, and encourages innovation. Essentially, the more fun you have, the more effective you become.
Experts often advise finding fun in everything—whether it’s exercise, learning, socializing, or even work.
As Nobel Prize-winning biologist David Baltimore puts it, "In choosing a profession, find one that’s fun."
Examples of Having Fun at Work:
1. Be the Light. Be Light. A sales head in a telecom company installed a bell in his office. When an executive made a sale, they rang the bell, and the whole office cheered. This simple act boosted morale and motivated others, creating a fun atmosphere without compromising work’s seriousness.
2. Have Unconditional Celebrations. A team leader in an FMCG company hosted surprise parties and outings, not just after great months, but anytime. These unexpected celebrations showed employees they were valued as people, not just numbers, making work feel more enjoyable.
3. Demonstrate Humor.A branch manager at an insurance company set up a whiteboard for jokes. The only rule: no jokes about race, religion, or gender. Reading the jokes aloud created moments of laughter, lightening the office mood and building camaraderie.
Having fun at work not only makes interactions more enjoyable but also boosts productivity and well-being. So, next time work feels stressful, try incorporating a little fun—it could make all the difference.
Fun means enjoying what you do. The more you enjoy, the more effective you’ll be.
