During a workshop on Selling Skills a participant came up to me wanting to know how he could "get better at his job." He had been in sales for 2 years and although he has been performing well, he felt the need to upscale and upgrade himself. He asked for my suggestions and I shared with him the following 6 inputs:
1. Get out of your comfort zone, and stay out – do new, do different, do what scares you, do what you keep postponing. Explore ways to improve your knowledge & skills, your ways of working, your relationships and your results.
2. Be proactive – make things happen rather than wait for things to happen. Don't wait for the iron to get hot before you strike, instead strike the iron so hard that it gets hot. Create your own opportunities.
3. Find a coach & mentor – no matter how good you are, someone's better. Someone who can help you learn a few more lessons, take you a few more miles further and help you rack up a few more sales.
4. Take regular feedback - become aware of your their strengths and areas of improvements, so you know what to 'continue' & what to 'change.' Ask for feedback from reliable and trustworthy sources and ensure you solicit both types of feedbacks - positive & negative.
5. Get into a learning loop – read relevant books, watch informative videos and participate in enlightening discussions.
6. Control your ego - for very obvious reasons. It is said that ‘relationships never die a natural death; they are murdered by ego, bad attitude & ignorance’. So let the E, GO.
Go ahead punk, get better.
