Strategic Thinking - Why We Play Small

Strategic Thinking Workshop for Area Managers (AM) of Godfrey Phillips India Limited (GPI) at Mumbai.

Off the many discussions on the essentials of strategic thinking during the two day workshop, one that was particularly thought provoking was - why do we play small when it comes to setting goals?

I have touched upon this earlier and I would like to restate what I consider are the 3 main reasons why we play small and not go big:

First reason - society induced identity & beliefs. In many ways we allow others to create our identity ('this is not a man's job', 'only men can do this', etc.) as well as limit our beliefs ('you'll never make it', 'you'll fail', 'it's never been done before', etc.). When we are influenced more by what others say to us, about us, rather than believing and trusting in our own capabilities, we tend to play small.

Second reason - giving in to the dream destroyers ('too tall to be an actor', 'your son's too stupid to learn anything', 'whoever heard of a woman cricketer?', etc.). Dream destroyers make us feel guilty about dreaming different and dreaming big, so we play small.

Third reason - adopting other’s experience as own ('don’t invest in shares, you’ll lose money', 'been there done that and lost, so don't go there', 'it’s mission impossible', etc.). They have burnt their fingers and so will we, let's play small.

Other's don't define you, only you define you. So do yourself a big favour and go big.
